The Lead Keeper is responsible for overseeing daily animal care operations and ensuring that all animals receive consistent, high-quality care that meets Shadow’s Reptiles’ welfare, safety, and enrichment standards.
This role combines hands-on animal care with leadership, accountability, and oversight. The Lead Keeper sets the tone for care standards, enforces protocols, trains staff, and acts as the first point of escalation for animal health, behavior, and care concerns.
Oversee daily feeding, cleaning, and enrichment schedules
Ensure all care protocols are followed accurately and consistently
Monitor animal health, behavior, and enclosure conditions
Identify issues early and escalate concerns immediately
Coordinate animal movements, introductions, and enclosure changes
Supervise, train, and support animal keepers and assistants
Assign daily tasks and verify completion
Enforce standards, protocols, and safety procedures
Provide coaching, feedback, and corrective guidance
Assist with onboarding and ongoing training of new staff
Ensure accurate daily logs, feeding records, and care documentation
Communicate animal status updates to management
Maintain clear communication between keepers, operations, and event teams
Maintain clean, organized, and safe animal areas
Ensure biosecurity and sanitation protocols are followed
Identify facility or enclosure issues and coordinate repairs
Support compliance with internal standards and inspections
Prepare animals for encounters and mobile shows as needed
Ensure animals selected for events are healthy and suitable
Coordinate with the Experience team to maintain animal welfare during events
Proven experience in animal care or husbandry
Strong leadership and team management skills
Deep understanding of animal welfare and safety
Excellent attention to detail and consistency
Ability to make calm, informed decisions under pressure
Physically capable of performing hands-on care duties
Reliable, punctual, and highly accountable
Zoo, sanctuary, or exotic animal facility experience
Experience supervising animal care staff
Background in biology, animal science, or related field
Animals are consistently healthy, clean, and enriched
Care routines are completed accurately and on time
Staff follow protocols without shortcuts
Issues are identified and addressed proactively
Animal areas reflect professional, inspection-ready standards
